On Tuesday 22nd our class, the 5 B-WS, had the great opportunity to visit one of the major South Tyrolean companies, Pichler Projects (former Stahlbau Pichler). A family business which works in the steel sector, they have specialized on steel buildings and facades with a special focus on quality and uniqueness.

We recieved a detailed tour through the different parts of the company. Since Pichler projects produces everything in Bolzano, we first visited the huge production area first. For their buildings they use 90% recycled steel, as the material doesn’t decrease in quality when recycled.

The next workstep we were able to look into, was the assembly. There we learned another particularity of the company: Pichler projects offers the full “cover” of a building, everything from windows to doors and shutters, they are able to build a whole envelope of a building for their clients without any other company being involved.

The third and final part of our visit contained a tour through the offices, where we saw the planning of the building: nowadays the process of creating a building is about 70% planning and 30% production and assembly.

Mr Walder finished off with a presentation about marketing, goals and values of Pichler Projects, which gave us a closer look into the company’s philosophy and why it is so successful. Finally we had the chance to see some of the company’s most spectacular buildings and constructions such as the impressive 520 W 28 Street in New York by Zaha Hadid Architects or the Zugspitze Bergstation in Germany.

All in all, our visit at Pichler Projects was an inspiring and important experience for our class.
